The powerful Rocket V-8 engine, sporting five main bearing design and oversquare bore-and- -stroke configuration claimed an impressive 135 horse power 3600 rpm. The Rocket engine was originally slated for the larger and heavier Olds 98 but the combination of the strong Rocket and the light 88 Coupe soon became winning combination Oldsmobile never sponsored racing directly but that didn' stop racers from driving the Rocket 88 into victory lane.
